Birthday Wishes

When I turned 59, my daughter, Bernadette, wrote a blog post entitled "To My Father." The post contains a list of lessons she's learned from me about parenting, business, and life.

While Berni may credit me with giving her guidance, that's the easy part. The hard part is taking action and she has a history of fearlessly attacking all challenges.

Here's a sample of lessons she shared...

  1. Kids like when you talk to them like adults.

  2. Dads should know how to braid their daughters’ hair.

  3. Don’t ask a child if they want to go to bed, tell them it is bedtime.

  4. Chores are a good thing! Make sure your kids have them and do them.

  5. Keep your kids’ secrets if they ask you to.

  6. Encourage your children to have strong relationships with each other.

  7. You should always feel excited about the projects that you are working on.

  8. Building strong relationships with others is the best way to strengthen your personal brand.

  9. People love to talk about themselves. One the easiest ways to leave a good impression is asking someone about themselves.

  10. Make sure you are excited to get up in the morning.

  11. Take care of your body.

  12. Always stop at a kid’s lemonade stand.

  13. Understand people’s faults, and don’t hold it against them.

  14. You should never say “I’m bored.” There is no excuse for that!

  15. Reach out to people (authors, business-owners, speakers, etc.) that you respect in life. Share with them how you feel.
